Analog Transmission of Degradable Content over Wireless Channels

چکیده
Streaming degradable content (such as video or audio) over a wireless channel presents new challenges to modern digital design, which was founded on the separation theorem of Shannon theory. Joint source-channel coding (JSCC) has recently received increasing interest to address the varying nature of the wireless channel conditions (under mobility or multicast). The conventional approach to JSCC which combines successive refinement with superposition coding is still digital and separable. However, for a white Gaussian source on a white Gaussian channel, it is outperformed by uncoded, linear scaling, which achieves Shannon’s distortion limit. Practical degradable content sources are not white, but better approximated by multivariate / non-white Gaussian models. We investigate the performance of a linear, analog communication scheme for such sources. We find that there exist regimes where the analog scheme is near-optimal for point-to-point communication and provides significant gains over the conventional digital design for broadcast. We discuss how such a communication system could be implemented on top of the ubiquitous OFDM PHY layer.

A New Unequal Error Protection Technique Based on the Mutual Information of the MPEG-4 Video Frames over Wireless Networks
The performance of video transmission over wireless channels is limited by the channel noise. Thus many error resilience tools have been incorporated into the MPEG-4 video compression method. In addition to these tools, the unequal error protection (UEP) technique has been proposed to protect the different parts in an MPEG-4 video packet with different channel coding rates based on the rate...

Wireless network-on-chip (WiNoC) is considered as a novel approach for designing future multi-core systems. When the network traffic loads increase, a large number of packets will be sent into the wired and wireless links and can...

This paper describes new schemes for video transmission over wireless channels. Traditionally data was segmented using headers and data type (e.g. motion vectors, low and high frequency DCT coefficients). However, for wireless applications that have very low bandwidths available, a finer granularity of control may be essential. We propose content based approaches for further video segmentation....

Analog joint source-channel coding (JSCC) is a communication strategy that does not follow the separation principle of conventional digital systems but has been shown to approach the optimal distortion-cost tradeoff over additive white Gaussian noise channels. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of analog JSCC over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels. Since, due to co...
